KCVI student David Simon lets us know what’s up at the corner of Frontenac and Earl. Google image searched photo by Andrew MacKinnon.

The local music scene here in Kingston is definitely booming with great concerts like those in the Apple Crisp series, but there is a brand new wave of artists rushing in to join the party. The high school bands that have formed over the last couple of years are producing amazing music, and I get to be right in the middle of it. Last year at my school, KCVI, a club was formed known as The Musician’s Guild, and our goal is to support and promote all the talented musicians in our age group. We’ve brought back the intimacy of high school music by having relaxed and simple lunch time concerts, and cool evenings in the courtyard. At the same time, the Musician’s Guild is upping the ante of what’s considered “high school music” by hosting large scale, professionally engineered concerts. Most notably was the December 3rd coffeehouse where 18 young acts all performed without a hitch, and audience response was amazing! Now we are setting up a recording studio in the school, so that everyone has a chance to produce great quality recordings for free.

The KCVI Musician’s Guild is also looking to do a collaborative concert with Apple Crisp in late spring, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for info on that wonderful match-up! If you are looking to experience the truly amazing talent of high school bands, come to Market Square at 8pm on March 10th for a concert organized completely by KCVI students! This concert, ‘Rock For Rescue’ is put together in conjunction with the charity organization ‘Invisible Children’. This concert is 100% free, and proceeds from merchandize sales go to support child soldiers in Uganda. At the show there will be 10-12 of the best high school bands, including The Day Before Next, who will be playing at the February 24th Apple Crisp concert with Pete Samples and TimKnightUs.

Finally, KCVI has its own student-run radio station that can be picked up in the downtown area. Tune in to CKVI 91.9 FM the Cave, and listen to all varieties of music chosen and DJed by high school students.
