The silt is a trio of multi-instrumentalists named Ryan Driver (vocals, nylon-string guitar, drums, analog synth, flute), Doug Tielli (vocals, elec. guitar, trombone, bass, melodica) and Marcus Quin (simultaneous bass and drums, vocals, bass clarinet, er-hu, lap steel). Since 1999, they have been singing skewed love-sick roots ballads that are at times rife with Beach Boys-Stanley Brothers-esque thee part harmonies. Dizzyingly adorable, they seem to capture the loopy spirit of early Palace, yet with an underlying warbling eclecticism. The silt released their first two records on Rat Drifting in 2002 and 2004. Their third recording Cat’s Peak was originally released on Fig Records in 2007 and was re-released on UK’s Fire Records in early 2009. All three members perform in several other Toronto-based groups including with Sandro Perri, Drumheller, Ryan Driver Quartet, The Reveries and No Man Band.

The silt took a bit of a break from the hectic life of drifting and waltzing around, yet meandered their way back together in March 2009 to pick up where they left off.

“When Toronto’s Jennifer Castle, performing under the name Castlemusic, stepped out onto the Sidetrack’s stage with just her electric guitar in hand, she was an unknown act on the night’s bill. Replacing the AWOL Will Kidman, Castle started the evening off slow and steady with a series of tunes that smoldered with emotion. Castle’s sparse, sometimes shaky guitar work provided the perfect complement to her ardent vocals as she built songs from whispers into raging storms, pounding out massive sounding chords and then pulling back just as quickly. The music was by no means easy to listen to, and that’s exactly what made it so powerful—Castle’s short set was as honest as music can get.” – Vue Weekly

Oh my! This promises to be a lovely show. Will there be any tickets available beforehand? I would hate to get to the venue on the night of and have the tickets be already tragically sold out.

Hi Alie – tickets will only be available at the door, but as long as you’re there at 8pm you’ll be able to get in!
