About Hey! (2009), Rueben’s Latest Album:

Rueben deGroot has been playing his original music across North America for the last ten years using his warm voice and memorable melodies to tell his stories of odd ball characters and off-beat narratives. DeGroot’s latest disc, his fouth solo album, was co-produced by Luther Wright a mainstay of the Kingston music scene. The two have spent the last 12 months developing a group of songs that stray from country into jazz and back through rhythm and blues elements with horn punches and female backup vocals. The lead track, Ladiez Benz is the story of a guy who falls in love with his girlfriend’s car and steals it. Another, Mandolin, is about a sad man learning the mandolin, his tears streaming “down his double chin” as he looks at his fingers.

The new disc, “Hey!” features guest musicians from all over the country including Steve Dawson who recorded his parts in Vancouver and sent them to Ontario to be added in to the mix. Sarah Harmer recorded backing vocals on the track An Island and Kingston resident and former Lady Racer, Christina Foster lent her voie to six of the album’s tracks. Artist also featured on the record include Joey Wright on mandolin and guitar, Dan Curtis and Jason Euringer on guitars and Spencer Evans playing the clarinet. Writing with deGroot on the album were Cameron Latimer, deGroot’s bandmate in the Westcoast country-jazz act The Seams and Ridley Bent, an Open Road artist from Winnipeg.
